WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Whittier 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Slade Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens 7-8 overall.
The Sagehens were led by Nohea Kahaulelio and Lucie Abele who each netted two goals in the win. Anna Yu, Bella Villa, Kahea Kahaulelio and Nadia Paquin each scored one goal as well for the Sagehens. Morgan Stockham got the start in goal and picked up the win with 10 saves and four steals while only letting five goals pass.
Whittier started out strong against Pomona-Pitzer as they outscored the Sagehens 4-2 in the first half. The Poets started out with the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead before Nohea Kahaulelio found the back of the net for her first goal of the game to even the score at 1-1.
Whittier went on to end the first period with a goal and started the second with another to take a 3-1 lead. Each team netted one more goal before halftime as Paquin scored off of a pass from Janelle Lewis, but the Sagehens trailed 4-2 at the break.
The Sagehens took over in the third period outscoring the Poets 4-1. Nohea Kahauleio scored the first goal of the half off of an assist from Lewis with the Poets answering with their only goal of the third to hold a 5-3 lead. Pomona-Pitzer then netted three-straight goals to end the third from Abele, Kahea Kahaulelio and another from Abele to take a 6-5 lead heading into the fourth.
The defense and Stockham shut down the Poets' offense in the fourth as they allowed no goals for Whittier in the final period. Pomona-Pitzer added two more goals to their total from Yu and Villa as some good late defense held off the Poets for the road win.
