Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Fall To No. 1 USC And No. 16 Long Beach At Triton Invitational

SAN DIEGO, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell in both games of the opening day of the Triton Invitational with a 15-4 loss against No. 1 Southern California and a 17-8 loss to No. 16 Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Pool.

Season Impact: with the losses, the Sagehens fall to 0-4 overall to start the season.

USC 15, Pomona-Pitzer 4

Four different Sagehens found the back of the net against the Trojans with seniors Anna Yu, Samantha Martinez, Nohea Kahaulelio and Kahea Kahaulelio all scoring one goal each.

The Trojans gained the upper hand early on as they started off with a 6-0 lead throughout the first period. USC played some strong defense against the Sagehens as they held Pomona-Pitzer scoreless in the first half and held a 12-0 lead at the break. 

The Sagehens came back with a strong third period as they outscored the Trojans 3-2. Yu and Martinez started off the scoring in the second half with back-to-back goals and after a USC goal, Nohea Kahaulelio added a goal before the end of the third. Each team scored one goal each in the second half as the Sagehen defense held the Trojans to just three goals in the third and fourth periods combined. Kahea Kahaulelio ended the day with a goal in the fourth but the Sagehens couldn't overcome the No. 1 team in the nation as they fell in game one of the Triton Invitational.

Long Beach State 17, Pomona-Pitzer 8

The Sagehens were led by Kahea Kahaulelio and Martinez who each netted two goals in the loss.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to another tough start in the first period as The Beach stopped the Sagehens from scoring in the first and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead heading into the second.

The Sagehens got on the board early in the second after a goal by Kahea Kahaulelio, but The Beach answered with four-straight goals to take a 9-1 lead with 3:37 left before halftime. The Sagehens ended the second outscoring LBSU 3-1 with goals from seniors Kyla Pickell, Martinez and Natalie Hill to cut the lead to 10-4 at the half.

The Beach opened the second half with back-to-back goals to extend their lead. Pomona-Pitzer got goals from Yu and Martinez but The Beach outscored the Sagehens 4-2 in the third to take a 14-6 lead heading into the fourth.

Kahea Kahaulelio and freshman Lucie Abele notched goals for the Sagehens in the fourth period, but the Sagehens couldn't make up the difference as LBSU came away with the win.
