Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Dominate SCIAC Doubleheader Against Occidental And La Verne

LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents La Verne 15-4 and Occidental 21-3 on Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Park and Taylor Pool.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens stay perfect in SCIAC play with a 12-0 record and improve to 18-10 overall.

Pomona-Pitzer 15, La Verne 4

The Sagehens were led by Kahea Kahaulelio who notched a season-high with five goals in the win. Jocelyn Castro and Janelle Lewis also tallied multi-goal games with two each.

The offense opened up in game one against the Leopards as the Sagehens notched 9 goals in the first half. Four of the goals were scored in the first period as Kyla Pickell, Kahea Kahaulelio and Lewis all found the back of the net early to aid Pomona-Pitzer in an early 4-1 lead.

La Verne exchanged goals with the Sagehens to open up the second to move the score to 5-2, but the Sagehens ended the half with four-straight goals from Kahauleio, Castro, Colleen Woo and Natasha Rosenthal to hold a 9-3 lead at the half.

The Leopards offense couldn't find an answer in the third period as the Sagehen defense shutout La Verne in the third while adding three more goals to the total from Kahaulelio, Castro and Lewis to extend the lead to 12-3.

While already having the game in hand, the Sagehens surrendered two goals to the Leopards in the fourth but still outscored La Verne with three goals from Morgan McCracken, Anna Yu and Isabel Natalia Wiesenthal to go on and win for the eighth time this season by 10 goals or more.

Pomona-Pitzer 21, Occidental 3

The Sagehens were led by Natasha Rosenthal who notched a career-high with four goals in the win. Crystal Huang and Bella Villa also had hat-tricks with three goals each.

Domination from start to finish in the game against the Tigers as Pomona-Pitzer quickly came out with a seven goal first period. Yu and McCracken got the Sagehens going with goals in the first two minutes of the game but Occidental responded to cut the lead down to just 2-1 with 5:15 left in the first.

The Sagehens scored three more goals from Castro, Kahaulelio and Villa before the Tigers scored their second goal of the day to make the score 5-2 but the Sagehens ended the first with back-to-back goals from Rosenthal and Wiesenthal to head into the second period with a 7-2 lead.

The second period was all Sagehens with all four goals scored by Pomona-Pitzer. Rosenthal got the period going with a goal followed by Castro and Huang before Wiesenthal scored the final goal with 43 seconds remaining to take an 11-2 lead at the half.

The Sagehens played another perfect period on defense to open up the second half holding the Tigers to no goals in the third while adding five of their own. The Sagehens began a streak of 10-straight goals to close out the game before Occidental scored the final goal of the fourth with 3:37 left to go.

Pomona-Pitzer totaled 36 goals in the day off of two games as they worked their way to a 12-0 start in the SCIAC this season.
