Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Go 0-3 At ASU Invitational

TEMPE, AZ. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team finished the ASU Invitational 0-3 on Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatics Center.

Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 7-8 overall on the year.

Pomona-Pitzer 6, Fresno State7

The Sagehens were led by Jocelyn Castro who tallied a hat-trick with three goals.  

Fresno State opened up the game with the first two goals to take an early 2-0 lead but the Sagehens responded with Castro's first goal of the match to end the first to cut the Bull Dogs' lead down to 2-1.

Both teams played a very even second period with each netting two goals. The Sagehens came out and scored two-straight goals from Morgan McCracken and Kahea Kahaulelio to take a 3-2 lead but the Bull Dogs came back with back-to-back goals to end the half to retake the lead at 4-3.

The Pomona-Pitzer defense put on a great performance in the third period as they helped shutout Fresno State in the third while Castro and McCracken both found the back of the net to give the Sagehens a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.

Castro opened up the fourth with a goal to push the Sagehens lead to two goals at 6-4 but Fresno State mounted a comeback with three-straight goals to end the game and handed the Sagehens a loss in the opening game of the ASU Invitational.

Pomona-Pitzer 4, Indiana 11

The Sagehens were led by McCracken who led the team with a team-high two goals in the loss.

The Sagehens started out in a good position against the Hoosiers as they won the first period outscoring Indiana 2-1. Samantha Martinez got the Sagehens going with a goal followed by a powerplay goal after Indiana tied the game at 1-1 by McCracken to end the first up 2-1.

The Sagehens netted two goals in the second period as well but the Hoosiers put up five goals to take a 6-4 lead at the half.

The second half was all Indiana as the Sagehens were shutout on offense in the third and fourth periods. The Hoosiers tacked on four goals in the third and one more in the fourth to hang on for the 11-4 win.

Pomona-Pitzer 6 Arizona State 15

The Sagehens were led by Natalie Hill who led the team with a team-high two goals in the loss.

ASU came out with a big first period to open up the game with six-straight goals in the first to take a 6-0 lead heading into the second. The Sagehens got on the board in the second with three goals in the period from Kahea Kahaulelio, Hill, and Nohea Kahaulelio but the Sun Devils tacked on six more goals in the second to take a 12-3 lead at the half.

The Sagehens matched the Sun Devils with three goals each in the second half. Arizona State notched all three of their second half goals in the third period while Janelle Lewis found the back of the net in the third for Pomona-Pitzer and Hill and Martinez notched goals in the fourth but the Sagehens couldn't come back against ASU in the final game of the ASU Invitational.
