Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Suffer First SCIAC Loss To Poets, 9-8

WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Whittier College 9-8 on Saturday afternoon at the Slade Aquatics Center.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop their first SCIAC game of the season and fall to 8-16 overall and 2-1 in conference play this season.

The Sagehens were led by senior Christina Williamson and sophomore Natalie Hill who each shared a team-high with two goals each in the loss.

The Poets were led by Gorrocino, De La Mora and Rivera who also shared team highs with two goals apiece.

Whittier got the scoring going in the first quarter as Gorrocino found the back of the net for her first goal of the game to give the Poets an early 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens and Poets each netted two goals in the first as Hill scored just 20 seconds later to tie the game at 1-1 and junior Jocelyn Castro scored the final goal of the quarter as Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer entered the second quarter tied at 2-2.

Pomona-Pitzer had a slight advantage heading into halftime as Williamson and senior Hope Grant each netted goals for the Sagehens as they went into the half with a 4-3 lead.

After an early goal by senior Chessa Burke to extend the lead to 5-3, the Poets answered with three-straight goals to close out the third and took over the lead at 6-5 heading into the fourth.

The Sagehens quickly tied the game in the fourth as freshman Bella Villa  found the back of the net off of an assist from sophomore Anna Yu but the Poets responded with back to back goals to hold a two goal lead at 8-6 with 4:35 to go.

Hill and Williamson came back to score their second goals of the game for the Sagehens and tied the game at 8-8 with under two minutes remaining but Whittier scored the winning goal with just 30 seconds left on the clock as Gorrocino snuck one past the goalkeeper to secure the win for the Poets.
