Women's Water Polo: Sagehens Open SCIAC Play with Big Win

CLAREMONT, CA — Nine different players scored and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team rolled on their way to a 20-3 win over the Caltech Beavers in their SCIAC opener Wednesday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

The Sagehens rolled from the beginning of the game opening up a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pomona-Pitzer then exploded in the second period, adding 11 more goals to go into the break up 15-0.

The Sagehens added another goal in the third, and four more in the fourth.

From the Coach: "It was good to see us get better," said Head Coach Alex Rodriguez. "We had really good energy. We're excited to see what we can do if we keep improving and getting better in our team tactics.

Janelle Lewis led the Sagehens with four goals. Crystal Huang, and Sasha Newton each finished the game with a hat-trick.

Kahea Kahaulelio, Esma DollakuKyla Pickell, and Erica Halaszynski each scored twice for the Sagehens.

Anna Yu and Nohea Kahaulelio each found the back of the net once. Morgan Stockham got the start in the cage, recording seven saves.

Halaszynski, Huang, Newton, Nohea Kahaulelio, and Kahea Kahaulelio each had an assist.

Season Impact: The Sagehens open conference play with a win and improve their overall record to 5-10. Pomona-Pitzer has won four of their last five games, with their only loss over the stretch coming to No. 10 UC Santa Barbara.

The Beavers fall to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC play.

Next Game: The Sagehens take a break from SCIAC play when they host the Bucknell Bison Wednesday, March 15 at 2 p.m. They will also host George Washington later that night at 7 p.m.
