CLAREMONT, CA. – Junior Jocelyn Castro scored the winning goal in double overtime as the Sagehens defeated non-conference opponent No. 25 Cal Baptist in game one of the Convergence Tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Sagehens were led by Castro who tallied a hat trick with three goals in the win. Senior Christina Williamson chipped in with two while senior Hope Grant, senior Chessa Burke and sophomore Natalie Hill each had one.
The Lancers were led by Spezzaferri who led the team with a hat trick as she tallied three goals in the loss.
The Sagehens jumped out to an early lead in the first as Williamson scored her first goal of the game off of an assist from junior Morgan McCracken to take a 1-0 lead with 4:58 left in the first.
Senior goalkeeper Ahsha Earwood earned the win for the Sagehens as she tallied four saves and three steals.
The Lancers responded with two-straight goals to end the first with the final one coming with under a minute remaining to take a 2-1 lead over the Sagehens after the first period of play.
The Lancers outscored the Sagehens 3-2 in the second but the Sagehens kept the score close as goals from Burke and Williamson kept Pomona-Pitzer close at the half as they trailed 5-3.
The Sagehens and Lancers alternated goals in the third as Hill and Castro scored goals for the Sagehens but Cal Baptist still held a two-goal lead at 7-5 heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer sparked a comeback in the fourth as Earwood kept the Lancers off of the board with a shutout in the fourth and McCracken and Castro both found the net to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
The two teams each scored one goal in each of the first overtime periods but the Sagehens scored the golden goal by Castro in the second overtime period to complete the comeback over the Lancers.
