CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-11 overall and now 2-2 in SCIAC play while Caltech drops to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play this season.
The Sagehens were led by Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong who had a team-high 10 kills in the win while Julia Zwaal had nine and Kayla Krilove chipped in with seven. Britnie Casillas lead the Sagehens as she tied her career-high with 18 assists and Laney Pope led the team with 14 digs.
The Sagehens earned a win in straight sets by the scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-20.
Pomona-Pitzer came out and built a big lead against the Beavers early on as they started the first set on a 14-4 run.
Caltech battled back to cut the score to 16-12 but Pomona-Pitzer rattled off eight-straight points and went on to win the set 25-14.
The Beavers came out in the second set and stayed right with the Sagehens as neither team trailed by more than four points throughout the entire set. With the score tied at 20-20, the Sagehens scored three –straight points to take a 23-20 lead and Krilove ended the set with a kill to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer took the third set convincingly as they quickly jumped ahead of Caltech and took a 20-12 lead. The Sagehens finished off the Beavers shortly after to claim their second SCIAC win of the season.
