THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team earned a win in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational as they defeated UC Santa Cruz 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens defeated the Banana Slugs in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18)
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Julia Zwaal who tallied a team-high 14 kills and 15 digs in the win. Isabel Kelly chipped in with 13 kills and Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong notched nine kills in the win. Jessica Finn led the team with 23 assists and it's the third time this season she reached 23 assists in a match.
After dropping the first set, the Sagehens jumped out to a big lead in the second set. The Banana Slugs fought back to cut the lead down to just two points but the Sagehens rallied back and tied UC Santa Cruz at 1-1.
Santa Cruz jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the third set but the Sagehens came back and tied the set at 13-13. The Sagehens went on to score 5 of the next 6 points and took the third set from UC Santa Cruz.
The Sagehens came out in set four and put away the Banana Slugs early as they jumped out to a 12-4 lead. Pomona-Pitzer piled on and claimed their first win of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational.
The Sagehens dropped their second match of the day as they fell to Pacific Lutheran 3-0.
The Lutes defeated the Sagehens in straight sets by the scores of 25-13, 26-24 and 25-13.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Zwaal who had 10 kills, Kelly followed with nine and Sophie Janssen chipped in with seven. Finn led the Sagehens with 19 assists and Janssen and Laney Pope shared a team-high 10 digs.
