LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's track and field team fell to Occidental College by a close margin, losing 70-66, in their first dual meet of the season. The Sagehens took first place in nine events total, including some standout performances from returnees Katherine Pelz and Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong.
Eliza Burke took first in the 400 meter dash, clocking in at 1:08.99. In the 3000 meter run, Maddie Bennet took the top spot at 12:02.44 while Elena Kim followed in second at 12:14.08. Addo-Ashong triumphed in two events, taking the 100 meter hurdles at 15.74, just 0.10 second short of the meet record, and winning the high jump at 5-1 3/4.
The Sagehens also took first in the 4x100 meter relay, as a team consisting of Gigi Gedye, Adeline Yu, Julia Ho, and Gianna Wu clocked in at 52.83. They also won the distance medley relay as Isabella Kearney, Amy Watt, Ariel Kivela, and Helen Guo combine to finish at 12:43.29. Watt later took the top in the long jump at 15-9 3/4. Prisca Diala won the triple jump at 34-0.
"This was a terrific season-opener for our squad," said Head Coach Kirk Reynolds. "We had some outstanding performances which will lay a foundation for our upcoming meets. We love competing with Occidental in this meet."
