Women's Track and Field: Gardner Sets Sagehen Record at SCIAC Multi Dual 1

CLAREMONT, CA — Abby Gardner set a program record in the steeplechase, and Maya Weigel won the 1500 meter Saturday afternoon in Pomona-Pitzer's first SCIAC Multi Dual of the season.

Gardner finished second in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:22.95. The time sets a new record for the Sagehens previously set by Isabelle Ambler in 2013 (11:33.66). 

Weigel won the 1500 meter with a time of 4:41.59, nearly three seconds ahead of the next closest finisher. She added another impressive performance in the meet, taking second in the 800 meter at 2:15.30. Weigel set the Pomona-Pitzer record in both events last season.

Cat Banobi took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.92. The senior also placed fourth in the 200 meter dash finishing with a time of 27.10.

Jessica Finn came in strong for Pomona-Pitzer, taking first in the javelin. Her winning toss of 123-09 places her seventh in the Sagehen record book. She also currently holds the fifth best throw (133-01).

Sophie Richards did her part, placing in the top three in both the 400 hurdles and 100 hurdles. In the 400 hurdles she took second with a time of 1:04.59, just behind Redlands' Jessica Fields (1:04.34). In the 100 meter hurdles, she placed third at a time of 15.32, the sixth fastest time in program history. Richards ran the fourth fastest time last week at the Rossi Relays (15.08).

Cybele Kappos added another top three finish for the Sagehens, finishing third in the discus with a throw of 96-03. She also took fourth in the hammer throw at 117-10.

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong  finished in fourth place finish in the high jump with a final leap of 4-11, and Kaile Sauro took fifth in the long jump at 16-04.25.
