Women's Tennis: No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Falls In Tough Match To No. 8 Tufts, 5-4

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell to No. 8 Tufts 5-4 on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.

Season impact: with the loss, the Sagehens drop to 6-3 overall.

 The Sagehens started out doubles on top with a nice win at the No. 2 spot as Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen earned an 8-2 win over Patricia Obeid and Tomo Iwasaki but the Jumbos came back with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.

Pomona-Pitzer and Tufts each took one of the first singles matches as Summer Garrison fell at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-1 but Caroline Casper came back with a win at the No. 1 singles spot 6-4, 6-1.

The Sagehens evened up the score at 3-3 as Arianna Chen won her singles match at the No. 5 spot with a 6-4, 6-1 victory but Tufts came back to win the match at No. 4 singles with Shivani Doraiswami losing set one in a tie breaker 7-6 (7-3) and fell in set two 6-4.

Zhao went on to win her singles match at No. 3 in a third set as she fell in set one 6-3 but rallied back to take sets two and three in convincing fashion with a 6-1, 6-0 victory to force the match to come down to a decision at No. 6 singles.

Jacinta Chen won set one in her match 6-1 but Tufts rallied back and took sets two and three by the score of 6-4 to take the No. 6 singles match and clinch a 5-4 in over the Sagehens.
