Women's Tennis: Chen And Zhao Win ITA West Regional Doubles Tournament

CLAREMONT, CA. -- Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao kicked off their 2017-18 tennis seasons with a win in the Fall ITA Regional Doubles Tournament this past weekend as they defeated the doubles team of Brown and Tan from CMS 6-2, 6-2.

By winning the doubles tournament, Zhao and Chen now earn All-American status for this season and are now both All-Americans in back to back seasons.

"I think the whole team was pleased with how we competed over the weekend", said Head Coach Mike Morgan. "Emily and Maryann's win was a very well earned icing on the cake for them, but also for the whole team. Maryann and Emily will now have a chance to play against some of the best Division III players in the country next week in Georgia at the ITA Oracle Cup. It is a chance to become an ITA Individual doubles champion as well."

Other Sagehens in action during the doubles tournament was the team of Jacinta Chen and Shivani Doraiswami who reached the quarterfinals before they were defeated by the team of Allen and Berger 8-4.

During singles action, freshman Summer Garrison played an impressive tournament as she climbed her way to the semifinals before she was defeated by Nicole Tan 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Garrison defeated fellow Sagehens Emily Chen in the quarterfinals 6-2,6-4 and defeated Madison Shea in the round of 16 6-2, 6-1.

Before falling to Garrison in the quarters, Chen had an impressive win over CMS singles player Kyla Scott 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and defeated Vacilisa Trofimova 6-2. 6-0.

Zhao had a good run in the singles tournament as well as she reached the quarterfinals before she was taken down by Linsday Brown of CMS 6-2, 7-5. Zhao went through the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-2 win and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the round of 32.

Doraiswami made her way into the round of 16 before she fell to Rebecca Berger 6-3, 6-1. Doraiswami defeated Kate Dolan 6-0, 6-2 and earned a win in the round of 64, 7-5, 6-0.

Yurie Heard, Rebecca Salaway and Jay Kim all won their first match in the round of 64 as Heard defeated Karen Kobayashi 6-1, 6-0, Salaway defeated Chiara Schwab 6-3-2 and Kim defeated Sarah Seeman, 6-3, 6-2.

With the Fall ITA Tournament the Sagehens end their fall schedule and will break until the start of their 2018 regular season in the spring.
