CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell to No.1 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-3 on Sunday afternoon in the Regional Final of the NCAA Tournament at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
The Sagehens jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles after earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Grace Hruska and Joy Kim first earned a win at the No. 3 doubles spot as they defeated the team of Kyla Scott and Madison Shea 8-4. CMS evened up the score at 1-1 after they won the No. 1 doubles with Lindsay Brown and Nicole Tan getting the win over Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao, 8-4. The Sagehens ended doubled with a win at the No. 2 spot as Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen defeated Catherine Allen and Katie Kousman 8-5 to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
The Athenas earned the first win of singles at the No. 3 spot as Mae Coyiuto fell to Allen 6-0, 6-1 to tie the score at 2-2. CMS then took the lead after a win at the No. 5 match as Brown defeated Hruska 6-1, 6-0 but the Sagehens came back to tie the match at 3-3 after Casper earned a win at the No. 1 singles match as she defeated Scott 6-2, 6-2.
CMS went on to clinch the match as they got wins at No. 4 and No. 2 singles. Jessie Cruz went on to win at the No. 4 singles spot with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Arianna Chen and the Athenas clinched at the No. 2 spot after Nicole Tan defeated Zhao 6-2, 6-1.
"We ended a very successful season for Sagehen women's tennis with a tough loss to No. 1 ranked CMS", said Pomona-Pitzer Head Coach, Ann Lebedeff.
