CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's swim and dive program concluded the regular season on a thrilling note, winning the senior day meet against Cal Lutheran and Caltech to finished undefeated in SCIAC regular season meets. The Hens took first place in 13 of the 16 events as Emma van der Veen, Maddie Kauahi and Anna Newman won two events each. Prior to the meet, the Sagehens honored seniors Manon Audebert, Alex Seidel, Victoria Vanderpoel, and Molly Weinstock for their hard work and commitment to the program.
Freshman Emma van der Veen started the meet with a solid performance on the 3-meter diving boards, scoring 240.40 to take first place. She scored 59.10 points higher than second-place Krystin Brown of Caltech. Van der Veen followed up with a first-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 238.34 to sweep the diving events.
Over in the competition pool, the Sagehens opened up with a convincing victory from team "A" in the 200 Yard Medley Relay as Angela Ling, Mackenzie Cummings, Alex Seidel, and Maddie Kauahi combined for a time of 1:47.56, more than three seconds ahead of the second-place team.
Anna Newman controlled the distance event, taking first in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:24.82. Despite the toll the 1650 took on Newman, she got back in the pool later in the meet and earned a top finish in the 200 Backstroke at 2:14.20. Angela Ling controlled the 100 Backstroke as usual, taking first at 57.99 while teammate Allison Liu followed in second at 1:00.38.
In the 100 Breaststroke, Mackenzie Cummings won the event at 1:07.91 while teammate Erin Bigus took second at 1:11.20. Cummings later took first in the 200 Breaststroke at 2:28.78. Maddie Kauahi earned her first individual win in the 50 Freestyle at 24.02 followed by a 100 Freestyle victory at 52.27.
Sabrina Kwan took first in the 100 Butterfly at 58.98 followed by Cummings who tied for second at 1:00.17 with Ling. Katherine Lauerman closed out the individual events with a first-place victory in the 400 Individual Medley at 4:54.11 while Weinstock took second at 4:54.40.
The Sagehens capped off the meet with a victory in the 400 Freestyle Relay as team "A" comprised of Liu, Kate Denend, Seidel, and Kauahi took first at 3:35.13.
Up Next: The Sagehens will take next weekend to prepare for the SCIAC Championship which will go from February 21st to 24th. Preliminary events start at 9 a.m. and the finals beginning at 5 p.m.
