Jones earned All-West Region as a defender after winning Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors. Jones led the best defense in the SCIAC this season. During the 14-game conference slate, Jones anchored a Pomona-Pitzer backline that allowed just five goals which includes a penalty kick and an own goal. Jones helped the Sagehens shutout 11 opponents this season, which is the most since 2016.
Jones also was a scoring threat this season for the Sagehens as she was a danger on set pieces and headers inside the box. She ended the year with two goals including a game-winning goal against Caltech.
VarnBuhler earned All-West Region as a midfielder this season after earning First Team All-SCIAC as well. VarnBuhler led the Sagehens this season with 18 points off of a team-high nine goals. VarnBuhler has been a dangerous scoring threat for the Sagehens all year long in the middle of the field. She has one hat-trick this season and has not gone more than two games without a goal this season.
"I am really pleased to see SJ and Bria get this recognition as they were both key pieces in our team's success this year," said Head Coach Jennifer Scanlon. "These are two really impactful players who helped set the tone for us on offense and defense. SJ was dominant at center back, organizing our stingy defense and breaking up plays. Bria took her game to a new level this season, as she moved into the attacking center mid role and scored some important goals for us all year long."
The Sagehens ended 2018 as the regular season SCIAC Champions with a 13-3-3 overall record and 9-3-2 in conference play with an appearance in the SCIAC Tournament Championship game.
