Women's Soccer: Sagehens Leave Northern California With 1-0 Win Over UC Santa Cruz

Claremont, CA. – Junior Bria VarnBuhler netted the only goal of the game as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated non-conference opponent UC Santa Cruz 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 5-1 overall.

The Sagehens were led by VarnBuhler who netted the only goal of the game in the win. Junior Isa Berardo and sophomore Kendall Shein split time in goal for the Sagehens. Berardo went the first 45 and Shein ended the day for the Sagehens with one save and recorded the win.

The Sagehens dominated play against the Banana Slugs for the entire 90 minutes. Pomona-Pitzer outshot UC Santa Cruz 14-1 and also earned nine corner kicks to Santa Cruz's one.

Although the Sagehens were busy on offense, The Banana Slugs' goalkeeper kept the majority of shots out of the cage as Malia Starita registered seven saves on the Sagehens' 14 shots.

The defense played well for UCSC but the Sagehens broke through in the 55th minute as VarnBuhler turned defense into offense as she stole the ball and curled a shot in from the left edge of the box to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

The Pomona-Pitzer defense stayed solid all game long as they limited scoring opportunities to come away with 1-0 win on the road.
