CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team will host the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship game as the Sagehens host Whittier College on Saturday, November 4th at 12:00 p.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
The Sagehens entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed with a 9-7-3 overall record and 6-5-3 in SCIAC play and earned a 2-1 win over Redlands in the conference semifinals on Thursday afternoon. Pomona-Pitzer prevailed with goals from Natasha Thornton-Clark and Lily Gane to punch their ticket to the SCIAC Championship on Saturday.
Whittier entered the tournament at the No. 4 seed with a 10-8 overall record and 6-5-3 in conference play. The Poets went on the road to face No. 1 seed and the SCIAC regular season champions in Cal Lutheran and came out with a 3-2 overtime win on the road.
Pomona-Pitzer is led by senior Abby Onderwyzer Gold who leads the team with 17 points with a team-high eight goals and one assist. Right behind her is sophomore Bria VarnBuhler with 16 points on six goals and four assists.
Leading the Sagehens in goal is sophomore Isa Berardo. Berardo tallied seven wins this season to go along with 78 saves for a .789 save percentage.
The Poets are led by Leah Kolek who has 16 points this season and is tied for most goals on the team with Miranda Yzabal with seven.
In goal for Whittier is Stella Thermos who has 38 saves this season with a 4-4 record.
The Sagehens won the SCIAC regular season a year ago and will look to keep their names at the top of the SCIAC conference again this season while Whittier looks to knock off both top teams in the conference and extend their Cinderella season into the NCAA Tournament.
Game time is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
