CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in SCIAC play this season.
Pomona-Pitzer was led by Bria VarnBuhler and Abby Onderwyzer Gold who each netted two goals in the win. Isa Berardo nailed down her fifth win of the season as she tallied five saves in a combined shutout effort with fellow goalkeeper Kendall Shein who helped out with two saves of her own.
The Sagehens looked for revenge against the Panthers this season as the two teams met earlier this season with Chapman coming out on top at home in double overtime.
Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time avoiding the attempted sweep of the season series as VarnBuhler netted her first goal of the afternoon in the 26th minute to allow the Sagehens to play from in front.
The Sagehens doubled up their lead as VarnBuhler found the goal yet again this time off of an assists from Lindsay Piwinski to extend the Pomona-Pitzer lead to 2-0 in the 34th minute.
With the Panthers just trying to get into the half down only two goals, the Sagehens had other plans as Onderwyzer Gold found a ball that was misplayed by the Chapman defense and punched it in for the score and put the Sagehens up 3-0 with just two minutes left until halftime.
The Sagehens made their final blow of the afternoon in the 50th minute as Onderwyzer Gold made a run into the box where she was found on a long ball that left the foot of Piwinski and played on by Vanessa Blaylock to set up Onderwyzer Gold for a tap in goal to extend lead to 4-0 and cap off what was one of the best offensive performances for the Sagehens this season.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next travel to CMS as they look to sweep the Sixth Street Rivalry on Wednesday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m.
