CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team opened up their 2017 season with a 2-0 victory over non-conference opponent Puget Sound on Friday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Bria Varnbuhler who tallied one goal and one assist in the win while senior Natasha Thornton-Clark notched her first goal on the season as well.
The Sagehens could not find the net in the first half but dominated possession of the ball against the Loggers as they outshot Puget Sound 9-3 in the first half.
Thornton-Clark broke through for the Sagehens in the 53rd minute as Varnbuhler opened her up inside the box and Thornton-Clark put one past the keeper to give the Sagehens their first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Sagehens doubled their lead after Varnbuhler settled a ball just inside the box and rocketed a shot passed the Loggers' keeper to put the Sagehens on top 2-0.
The Sagehens defense picked up right where it led off last season as they posted a shutout in game one of 2017. With this shutout, that makes 10-straight regular season home games that the Sagehen defense has not let allowed a goal on their home field. The last time the Sagehens allowed a regular season home goal was October 24th 2015.
The Sagehens will put that record to the test as they next face off against Chicago for an Elite 8 rematch from last season on Sunday, September 3rd at 10:00 a.m.
