CLAREMONT, Calif. – Bria VarnBuhler gave the Sagehens the early lead, and the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team rolled on its way to a 5-2 win over UC Santa Cruz in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs.
The Sagehens advance to the second round of the tournament and will host rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The Athenas beat Pacific Lutheran 1-0 in their opening game.
Pomona-Pitzer went up 5-0 before the Banana Slugs were able to score twice in the final 10 minutes of the game.
VarnBuhler needed just seven minutes to get the Sagehens on the board, scoring on an unassisted goal to give Pomona-Pitzer the opening lead.
The Sagehens added another goal before the end of the half off a header from Agueda Dudley-Berrios. Katie Tao took the corner kick and found Dudley-Berrios at the near post who connected just enough to send the ball past the keeper.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Sagehens stopped a clear attempt by UCSC, setting up a counter-attack by Danika Bethune who beat the goal keeper one-on-one for an easy goal.
In the 68th minute, VarnBuhler gathered a ball at the top of the box and sent a hard shot to the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the day and a 4-0 lead.
Corey Goelz finished the game with three saves.
