CLAREMONT, CA. – Emma Sheridan netted the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining to push the Sagehens over non-conference opponent George Fox 16-15 on Saturday afternoon at the South Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 8-2 overall and have now won their fifth-straight game of the season.
The Sagehens were led by Sarah Woo who notched a new career-high for the second game in a row with six goals in the win. Lilly Thomey added another hat-trick to her name as well with three goals for her eighth trick of the season. Annie Price earned the win for the Sagehens in goal with 12 saves and made a few crucial saves late to keep the Sagehens in the game.
The Bruins got the better of the Sagehens in the first half as they jumped out to an early lead with three of the first four goals of the game to take a 3-1 lead. Pomona-Pitzer erased the George Fox lead with back-to-back goals from Sophia Silane and Woo to even the score at 3-3 but George Fox ended the half with four of the last six goals to hold a 7-5 lead at the break.
George Fox opened up the second half with a goal to take their largest lead of the day over the Sagehen at 8-5 but that lead was short lived as Pomona-Pitzer responded with three goals in three minutes off of the sticks of Sal Marx, Sonia Olson and Thomey to even the score up once again at 8-8 with 23:13 remaining.
The two teams went back and forth while trading goals throughout the remainder of the half but the Sagehens found themselves up two goals at 15-13 with just 5:46 remaining after a free position goal by Woo.
The Bruins came back with two goals in a row to tie the game up for the eighth time at 15-15 with just under four minutes to play. George Fox went on to win the face off but Price was a wall in the final minutes of play as she came up with two huge saves to keep the Sagehens level at 15-15.
It was then the Sagehens marched down the field and Sheridan netted the go-ahead goal with 41 seconds remaining. The Sagehens went on to win the draw and ran out the clock as they won a non-conference thriller against the Bruins.
