CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team defeated non-conference opponent Whitman 11-8 on Wednesday afternoon at the South Athletics Complex.
Season impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-5 overall this season while Whitman drops to 4-5 overall this year.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Lilly Thomey who had a game-high four goals for the Sagehens in the win. Senior Rebecca Long and freshman Sonia Olson each tallied two goals for the Sagehens while junior Sallie Marx, freshman Meridian Lee and freshman Sophie Hubbell each chipped in with one.
The Blues were led by the trio of Abbey Dias, Lindsay Schwartz and Mary Noyes who each tallied two goals in the loss.
Junior goalkeeper Mckenzie Scott picked up the win for the Sagehens as she tallied 14 saves with a save percentage of 63.6% in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a very early lead as Thomey got the Sagehens going just 38 seconds into the game as she found the back of the net off of a pass from Hubbell to take an early 1-0 lead.
After Whitman tied the game at 1-1, the Sagehens went on a streak of five-straight goals coming from Long, Olson and Thomey as Pomona-Pitzer held their largest lead of the afternoon at 6-1.
Whitman began to battle back towards the end of the first half as they ended the first with four of the last five goals to cut the lead down to just 9-6 heading into halftime.
The second half was much more of a defensive battle between the two teams as only four total goals were scored. Whitman opened up the half with a goal to cut it down to just a two-goal deficit at 9-7 with 23:34 remaining but the Sagehens answered with back to back goals from Lee and Olson to widen the gap back up to 11-7.
Pomona-Pitzer gave up one more goal just 30 seconds after to hold an 11-8 lead with 11:14 remaining but the Sagehens successfully ran out the rest of the clock and held on for their fourth win of the season.
