CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team defeated Occidental in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Semifinals by the score of 21-10 on Saturday night at the South Athletics Complex.
The Tigers came into today's game as the number five seed as they defeated No. 4 seed Redlands 11-10 in overtime in Round One.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Sallie Marx who tallied a season-high five goals for Pomona-Pitzer. Junior Rebecca Long, freshman Lilly Thomey and senior Ally McLaughlin all chipped in with four goals each.
The offenses went to work in the first half of this game as the two teams combined for 19 goals in the first half. The Sagehens struck first just 16 seconds into the game as senior Sarah Markowitz found the back of the net off of an assist by senior Aubrey Douglass.
The Tigers responded with two-straight goals, one by Madi Hallare and one by Sierra Slack, to take a 2-1 lead over Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens came back and scored seven-straight goals with Long scoring three of her four goals, Thomey and Marx each found the back of the net once and Markowitz scored two of her own during the scoring streak as the Sagehens jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 20:14 left in the first half.
Occidental broke the goal streak as Katie O'Connor scored but Marx responded with two goals in a row to push the lead to 11-4.
The Tigers ended the half scoring three of the final four goals as Douglass scored her only goal of the night for the Sagehens and Pomona-Pitzer went into the half with a 12-7 advantage.
The second half consisted of three scoring runs between the two teams. Pomona-Pitzer started out the half with five-straight goals off of Thomey, Marx and three from McLaughlin to take a 17-7 lead.
The Tigers answered with three goals in a row before the Sagehens ended the game with four unanswered goals by Long, McLaughlin and two goals from Lilly Thomey as Pomona-Pitzer cruised past Occidental to advance to the SCIAC Finals.
The Sagehens will meet Chapman University in the SCIAC Championship on Saturday, May 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the South Athletics Complex on the campus of Pomona College.
