CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Occidental 12-8 on Wednesday night at the South Athletics Complex.
The win against the Tigers also marked Head Coach Sarah Queener's 100th career collegiate victory. Queener currently holds a 100- 36 overall record as a collegiate coach and is 60-29 at Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens started out to a slow start as the Tigers scored the first three goals of the game to take an early 3-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board with 19:09 left in the first half as Thomey found the back of the net off of a pass from Douglass to cut the Tigers' lead down to 3-1.
Long found the back of the net for her first goal of the game just a minute later off of a pass from Makrowitz to get the lead down to 3-2.
Occidental responded with two-straight goals to extend their lead to 5-2 but Pomona-Pitzer ended the half with four unanswered goals from Douglass, Thomey and two from Markowitz as the Sagehens took a 6-5 lead going into halftime.
Pomona-Pitzer struck first in the second half as Douglass scored her second goal of the game off of a pass from senior Ally McLaughlin to give the Sagehens a 7-5 lead.
Occidental responded with a goal of their own off of a free position shot from Mackenzie wright but Long followed that up with her second and third goals of the game to take a 9-6 with 16:51 remaining.
The Tigers cut it to a two-goal game after a goal by Sierra Slack with 16:29 to go but the Sagehens closed out the game with goals from Markowitz, Thomey, and Douglass as Pomona-Pitzer moves to 6-1 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens next take the field as they host their final regular season game of the year against Redlands on Saturday, April 16th at 11:00 a.m.
