Sagehens Rally To Force Overtime, But Fall To CMS

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team came back from a 7-4 deficit with five minutes left to force overtime, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored the only goal of the extra session and took an 8-7 win in a battle of unbeatens on Saturday morning.

With the win, CMS improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens suffer their first loss and fall to 3-1 on the year (all league games).

After the score was tied 3-3 at the half, the Athenas took control behind two goals from Lauren Clubb, and led 7-4 with the ball with less than five minutes left. However, sophomore Hannah Christenson forced a turnover on a clear attempt and fed freshman Rebecca Long in alone on goal with 4:26 left.

After CMS was called for a yellow card penalty, junior Katie Savino scored a free position shot with 3:04 on the clock to bring the Sagehens within a single goal. Junior Grace Geller than tied the score when she alerty corraled a stray pass in front of the cage and buried a shot to even it up at 7-7 with 1:16 left (tying goal pictured).

Pomona-Pitzer won the ensuing draw control and had two chances to win in regulation, but shots from junior Ally McLaughlin and Geller missed wide, and the game went to overtime with the Sagehens on a power play after another CMS yellow card.

The Athenas killed off the remaining 1:48 of the two-minute penalty, though, and Cara Cancelmo scored on a free position shot with 1:05 left in the first extra session. Kate Anello saved a free position shot from Long with three seconds left in the first overtime, and then had two saves in the final minute of the second overtime to seal the win.

Clubb had three goals to lead the Athenas, while Long had two to pace the Sagehens. Both goalies were sharp, as Anello finished with 12 saves for CMS, while Gaby Fukumura had nine for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Wednesday for a road game at Redlands, beginning at 7 p.m.
