Sagehens Dominant In Season Opener

Claremont, Calif. - Senior attack Jana London (pictured) had four goals and two assists as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to a 14-4 win over Whittier in the season opener for both teams.

Freshman Rebecca Long had a hat trick with three goals in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Sarah Markowitz added three goals and an assist.

Long got the Sagehens started with a goal on her first collegiate shot less than two minutes into the game. London followed with a goal, Long scored another and Markowitz scored twice to make the score 5-0 at the 15:42 mark.

Senior midfielder Kaitlin Jones and sophomore midfielder Emlyn Foxen added goals to make it 7-0, before Whittier broke the ice on a free position shot from Shaina Denny with 9:48 left. Aubrey Douglass closed out the first half with an end to end rush for a goal to make it 9-2 at the break and the Sagehens were able to coast in the second half.

Gaby Fukumura had five saves in her college debut to get the win, while Nicole Yorba had 10 for Whittier as Pomona-Pitzer held a 26-14 edge in shots.

The Sagehens return to action on Wednesday night for a home game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, beginning at 7 p.m.
