THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell late in a close contest to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran 57-55 on Saturday afternoon at Gilbert Arena.
Season impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens struggled getting out of the gate against the Regals as Cal Lutheran jumped out to a 6-0 lead. However, the offense began to click as Pomona-Pitzer took off on a 15-2 run to end the quarter to take a seven-point lead at 15-8 heading into the second quarter.
It didn't take the Regals long before they erased the lead the Sagehens built in the first quarter as they began the second on a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to one point at 15-14. Although Cal Lutheran came back, the Sagehens never gave up the lead in the first half as they went into the locker room holding on to a 23-22 lead.
The Regals came back and took the lead early on in the third quarter, but the Sagehens came back and tied the game late in the third after a made layup by Romero tied the game at 38-38 with just over a minute remaining.
The Sagehens and Regals entered the game tied 41-41 heading into the fourth as it all came down to which team would win the quarter. Pomona-Pitzer took the lead early on in the quarter but the Regals came back and tied the game at 55-55 after two made free-throws with 2:37 remaining. After a series of missed shots, the Regals finally got one to drop as they hit a layup with six seconds left to play to taker a late 57-55 lead. The Sagehens had an opportunity late as Romero got an open look with a chance to tie but couldn't get the shot to fall as the Regals held on for a close win at home against Pomona-Pitzer.
