CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 68-57 on Monday night at La Verne.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 0-12 on the year and 0-4 in SCIAC play. The Leopards earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Leopards were led by Faye Osburn who had a game-high 24 points to go along with nine rebounds. Brianna Bishop chipped in with 14 and Alex Withers and Karli Kato each with 10.
The Sagehens and Leopards came out trading baskets in the first few minutes until La Verne sparked a 11-3 run to go up 15-7 with 4:14 in the first quarter.
The La Verne offense got out to a hot start in the first as they shot 47.6% from the field in the first quarter and 100% from three-point range to lead 22-11 heading into the second.
The Sagehens played much better in the second half as they were only outscored 16-13 in the quarter but trailed the Leopards 38-24 at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer came out of halftime and slowly began to chip away at the Leopards' lead. The Sagehens outscored La Verne 16-15 in the third quarter but still trailed by 13 points at 53-40 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens threatened the La Verne lead multiple times in the fourth quarter but the Leopards always had an answer following big baskets by Pomona-Pitzer. The Sagehens cut the lead to less than 10 points four different times throughout the fourth quarter and cut the lead down to as low as six points with just 1:00 remaining but the Leopards maintained their lead and earned their first win of the season.
