Pomona-Pitzer Falls To Whitman On Day Two Of Whit Classic

Spokane, Wash. - The Whitman Women's Basketball team used a 16-2 run in the first half to break the game open and captured an 84-56 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday on the second day of the Whit Classic, hosted by Whitworth.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer's record to 0-2 on the young season after falling to host Whitworth yesterday, while Whitman improves to 2-0 after defeating St. Thomas (Minn.) by one point a day ago.

Sophomore Jenn Okonkwo started out the season with her second straight double-double, tallying 13 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Basha Brulee-Wills almost did the same, finishing with 15 points and nine boards. Sophomore Amelia Hummel (pictured) added nine points on 4-6 shooting for Pomona-Pitzer, which is currently playing with only freshmen and sophomores on its active roster.

Sarah Anderegg had 21 points and nine rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Whitman, while Meghan White added 16 points.

Whitman never trailed as it jumped out quickly to a 9-2 lead. The Sagehens hung around for a while and were still within 20-15 with 7:14 left in the half on an Okonkwo lay-up, before the 16-2 run stretched the lead up to 36-17.

After trailing 28-18 at the half, Pomona-Pitzer started the second stanza on a 7-0 run, as freshman Mary-Clare Bosco hit a three-pointer and Okonkwo and Brulee-Wills added lay-ups. Whitman, though, came right back with a 9-2 run and the Sagehens were unable to threaten again.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Hope International for a 7 p.m. contest.
