Hope International Holds Off Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Hope International Women's Basketball team jumped out to a fast start and held off a second-half Pomona-Pitzer rally for a 75-56 win on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Senior Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif. - pictured) and freshman Jenn Okonwko (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) had 11 points apiece to lead the way for Pomona-Pitzer, which falls to 0-7 on the year with the loss. Hope International, which was led by 21 points and nine rebounds from Andrina Rendon and 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals from Krystal Canning, improves to 7-5 with the win.

The Royals jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead by hitting four of their first five shots, and built as much as a 16-point first-half lead before settling for a 41-27 advantage at the break. A 10-0 run to start the second half gave Hope International its largest lead of the night at 51-27.

The Royals matched that margin at 58-34 with 13:03 before the Sagehens rallied to close the deficit to 11. Sones hit a jumper and added a three-pointer to cut the margin to 19, and a fast break jumper from freshman Juliah Shay Kim (Bakersfield, Calif.) with 5:15 left made the score 65-54.

Pomona-Pitzer had four chances to get the lead into single digits, but went 0-for-3 with a turnover, before Rendon hit two foul shots with 2:47 left to get the lead back to 13, starting a game-ending 8-0 run to make the final margin 19.

Brittany Bauman scored 15 points and Shawna Staves added 12 for the Royals, who had four players in double figures. Freshman Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.) had nine points on 4-5 shooting and six rebounds off the Sagehen bench, while Kim finished with eight.

Pomona-Pitzer has two weeks off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 29 against St. Joseph's (N.Y.) at 7 p.m.
