Cal Lutheran Repels Sagehens, Captures 67-48 Win

Claremont, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran Women's Basketball team built a 29-16 halftime lead and maintained the double-digit margin throughout the second half as it captured a 67-48 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.

With the win, Cal Lutheran improves to 6-1 overall, with the only loss coming to preseason No. 2 George Fox, and 2-0 in the SCIAC. Pomona-Pitzer falls to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play with the loss.

The Sagehens, who have opened SCIAC play against three teams with a combined one loss on the year (after facing undefeated Chapman and Redlands), continued to get a big lift from its freshmen. Jenn Okonkwo (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Juliah Shay Kim (Bakersfield, Calif.), who both missed the first two games, scored in double figures with 15 points and 10 points off the bench, respectively, while Amelia Hummel (Glenview, Ill.) had a game-high nine rebounds.

Okonkwo, in fact, has now been in double figures in each of her first three collegiate games, after tallying 11 in her debut last week against Chapman.

However, Cal Lutheran proved to be too much as it jumped to leads of 5-0 and 15-5 and never trailed. Pomona-Pitzer attempted to rally a few times in the second half, including a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays from junior guard Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore. - pictured), but the Regals used hot three-point shooting (12-25 for the game, including 7-12 in the second half) to fight off the Sagehen comeback efforts.

Channing Fleischmann led all scorers for Cal Lutheran with 17 points, including 4-4 from three-point territory, while Starla Wright added 12 and Rachel Heagy added 10. Alex Nelson had nine points and eight assists, while Erica Whitley had five points, eight rebounds and seven steals.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Wheaton (Ill.) at Voelkel Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. contest.
