Redlands, Calif. – The Redlands Women's Basketball team jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the game's opening minutes on its way to a 70-43 win over Pomona-Pitzer in the SCIAC opener for both teams.
The Sagehens fall to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC with the loss, while Redlands improves to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Mariah Barbetti-Cort led the way for Redlands with 17 points on 8-8 shooting from the floor, to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif. - pictured) had 13 and junior guard Alexis Sones (Los Angeles, Calif.) added 12 in the loss for the Sagehens.
Ashley Sevilla hit two three-pointers in the opening 14-0 run for Redlands, which was not snapped until Hashizume hit a jumper at the 16:00 minute mark. After Redlands led 21-4, Hashizume and freshman guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to get the Sagehens within 21-10, but they could not get the lead back down to double digits in the first half as they went into the break trailing 33-18.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to get within 14 points early in the second half at 35-21, but the Bulldogs then stretched their lead over 20 points (46-25) with 12:45 left in the game and were able to cruise from there.
Barbetti-Cort was the only player in double figures for Redlands, which had 12 different players score as it shot 59 percent from the floor on the day (29-49).
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a 5 p.m. contest in the first half of a doubleheader with the men's basketball team.
