Softball: Sagehens Fall In Double Header To CMS

CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer Softball team fell in a double header to CMS 3-2 and 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 7-2-1 on the year and 4-2 in SCIAC play.

CMS 3, Pomona-Pitzer 2

The Sagehens were led by senior Liz Rodarte who went a perfect 3-3 from the late with two walks. Rodarte also got the start on the mound and suffered her first loss of the season, but went 9.2 of solid pitching while just surrendering three runs and scattered nine hits.

A very even first game between two top teams in the SCIAC this season as it took nine innings to decide a winner. A scoreless five innings began the game until the Sagehens struck first in the top of the sixth after senior Baleigh McCuskey singled home first-year Kyla Walker to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.

A resilient CMS team tied the game in the bottom of the seventh after an RBI double down the line tied the game at 1-1 as the two teams prepared for extra innings.

Pomona-Pitzer pulled ahead in the eighth once more after an error brought in the go-ahead run and put the Sagehens up 2-1.

However, Athenas would not go away as a single through the right side of the infield drove in the tying run as the first game of the doubleheader continued.

CMS finally got the winning run across after a RBI single to right center to walk off in extra innings for the opening win of the Sixth Street Rivalry series.

CMS 2, Pomona-Pitzer 0

The Sagehens were led by Rodarte who went 3-3 to finish the day a perfect 6-6 from the plate.

Much like the first game, the Sagehens and Athenas started out with a low-scoring game beginning with five scoreless innings to start.

There wasn't much to separate the two teams with just two total runs and nine combined hits. The turning point in the game came on the only scoring play as CMS connected for a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer tried to come back in the top of the seventh but went down in order as CMS took both games at home against the Sagehens.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next  take on non-conference opponent Hiram on Friday, March 8th at 1:00 p.m.
