WHITTIER, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball Team continue to remain undefeated, after winning their road trip doubleheader against Whittier College on Saturday, winning the first game 7-1 and the second 2-0. Liz Rodarte and Alondra Reynoso both earned their second wins of the seasons on the mound while four different Sagehens belted a solo home run.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 4-0 record overall and are 2-0 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Whittier 1
First year Hannah Brajkovich was the star in the first game of the doubleheader, batting 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs. On the mound, Liz Rodarte delivered a quality start, pitching a complete game of 1-run ball with four strikeouts.
The Poets struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Kacey Whitney slapped a two-out RBI single, but Rodarte struck out the next batter to get out of the inning. Izzy Deatherage quickly tied the game at the start of the second inning, crushing the ball over right center for a solo shot.
The Sagehens took the lead in the top of the third when Brajkovich drilled a solo home run over center field to make 2-1. Rodarte was locked on for the remainder of the game, retiring nine of the next 11 batters to hold the Poets to one run.
At the top of the sixth inning, Pomona-Pitzer broke out with a four-run rally to pull away. With runners on first and third with two outs, Baleigh McCuskey capitalized on a fielding error by the Poets' first baseman to bring in the insurance run. Brajkovich continued the momentum with an RBI single, and Olivia Campion hit a base-clearing double to make it 6-1.
Rodarte helped her cause in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run, her first of the season. She retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the game.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, Whittier 0
Alondra Reynoso pitched phenomenally against the Poets in the second game of the doubleheader, throwing a complete game shutout, allowing only three hits. The junior got into a rough start in the first inning, giving up a leadoff single to Brittany Attaway who later stole second in the following at-bat. However, Reynoso proceeded to retire the next three batters at ease to keep the game scoreless.
The Poets almost threatened to score in the fourth inning with a runner on third and one out, but Reynoso quickly extinguished the flames, inducing a groundout and lineout to the next two batters.
The Sagehens finally got on board in the top of the sixth inning. First year Taylor Lehner belted a double to left center to lead the inning off. She later took third base off a wild pitch, and later scored on an error by the catcher.
At the top of the seventh, Baleigh McCuskey crushed a homerun to centerfield to tack on an insurance run to make it 2-0. Reynoso closed out the final inning at ease to secure the victory.
