LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team advanced to the second round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament with a 6-5 win over Whittier College on Friday afternoon at Campus West Field.
The Sagehens were led by Izzy Deatherage who went 3-4 from the plate with two doubles. Olivia Campion went 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI's while Kendal Kipper went 2-3 with a run scored in the win.
Liz Rodarte got the ball for the opening game and went five innings while giving up five runs with only two of them being earned. Rodarte scattered seven hits and got herself out of multiple situation with runners on and less than two outs.
The Sagehens got to play from in front as they scored one in the top of the first after Makensey Druckman singled to right field to bring in Campion. The Sagehens doubled their lead in the second as Campion grounded out to bring in Karina Falkstrom to put the Sagehens up 2-0.
Whittier's offense began to get hot as they continued to score one run in each of the next three innings to take a 3-2 over the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer responded with a run in the top of the fifth as Natalie Ireland brought home Campion on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3, but Whittier came back with their first multi-run inning of the day as they plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
The Sagehens battled back in their next at-bats as they strung together a few key hits to bring the top of their order to the plate with runners on base. Campion then doubled to cut the lead down to one run at 5-4 and then after a pitching change by Whittier, Rodarte blasted a two-run homer to center field to put the Sagehens on top 6-5.
Alondra Reynoso came on to relieve Roadarte in the sixth and did a stellar job as she only surrendered one hit in her two innings of relief work to earn the save and sent the Sagehens to the next round of the SCIAC Championships.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next take on CMS with the winner advancing to the SCIAC Championship game. The Sagehens and Athenas will have a coin flip tomorrow to determine home and away teams and will play at 1:30 p.m. at Campus West Field at the University of La Verne.
