Rodarte Throws Historic No-Hitter To Kick Off Season Opener

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball program got off to a hot start to the 2018 season, sweeping the Puget Sound Loggers on a Friday doubleheader 4-0 and 4-2. Liz Rodarte continued where she left off last season, making an impact on both ends of the field. In the first game, Rodarte earned her first no-hitter of her career and threw a career-high 14 strikeouts. She also crushed a two-run home run in that same game. In the second half of the doubleheader, she hit her second two-run bomb of the season while making some spectacular plays at first base.

Season Impact: The Sagehens start their season 2-0 while the Puget Sound Loggers drop to a 2-5-1 record.

Aside from Rodarte's incredible outing, Kristen Hong went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a run while Olivia Campion hit 2-for-4 with a run.

Rodarte was in rhythm at the start of the game, striking out the side to start the first. Later, with Olivia Campion on second base and two outs, Rodarte crushed an 0-1 pitch to center field to put the Sagehens up 2-0.

The junior continued to mow down batters, striking out seven consecutive hitters from the second inning to the fourth, only to see her streak end with a pop out in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth with bases loaded, Karina Falkstrom added an insurance run thanks to a fielding error from the opposing pitcher to make it 3-0. Later in the sixth, Izzy Deatherage brought home one run off a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Rodarte closed off her historic performance with a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, catching the final batter looking for the final strikeout.

The Sagehens maintained consistency in their second game, scoring four runs once again while riding on the coattails of another incredible pitching performance, this time by Alondra Reynoso. Reynoso threw a complete game, striking out nine and surrendering only two runs. Izzy Deatherage had a hot hitting performance, going 3-for-4 with a homerun while Rodarte went 1-for-3 with a two-run bomb.

Reynoso ran into a slight jam in the first inning, striking out the first two batters before giving up a walk and a hit to have runners on first and second. However, Rodarte made a diving catch on a bloop floater by Loggers' Erica Gott to get out of the inning.

It was déjà vu in the bottom of the first as Rodarte followed up Olivia Campion's RBI single by crushing a towering two-run shot in the same location as her last homerun to make it 3-0 for the Hens. Deatherage followed with a solo shot that sailed over the left field fence to make it 4-0.

The Loggers got back one run in the top of the fifth when Camille Goo lined an RBI single to right field. At the top of the seventh, Puget Sound cut the lead in half after Abby Brondos belted a single to deep center field to bring in a runner from second base. With no outs, the Loggers looked to get a rally going, but Reynoso kept her cool and collected three straight outs to finish the game.

Up Next: The Sagehens will host SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran tomorrow for a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
