THOUSAND OAKS, CA — Haylee Sindt went a perfect three for three at the plate, and the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team used a two-run third inning to surge ahead of the Regals and score a 3-2 win on the final day of their season.
The Sagehens finish their season 13-27 overall and 9-19 in SCIAC play.
With the game even at 0-0 in the top of the third, Kristen Hong got a rally started with a single to left center. Marya Ornelas then reached on a bunt to put runners on first and second. Pitcher Liz Rodarte then stepped into the box and singled to left, setting up Sindt with two outs and bases loaded.
The junior designated player then singled to center, bringing Hong home to give Pomona-Pitzer the 1-0 opening lead. With the bases still loaded, Natalie Ireland singled to left, scoring Ornelas to put the lead at two runs.
The Reglas responded in the bottom half of the inning with Courtney Sooy hitting a sacrifice fly that scored Jacy Watanabe.
But the Sagehens went back up by two the following inning. Sam Carlson opened up the inning with a double to left field. Sofia Baig then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Quinn Sheehy to third. A throwing error by the Regals' second basemen sent the senior home.
Cal Lutheran scored another run in the fourth but that was as close as they would get.
Rodarte got the start for the Sagehens. The sophomore pitched a complete game, striking out three and allowing just one earned run. Rodarte finishes the season with 110 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.47.
Game Two: Cal Lutheran 6, Pomona-Pitzer 4
The Sagehens tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Regals scored two in the bottom half of the inning to get the win in game two.
Izzy Deatherage led Pomona-Pitzer, finishing the game with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the third, Deatherage came up to bat with Marya Ornelas on first. The freshman doubled to left, bringing in Ornelas and tying the game at 1-1. Liz Rodarte then singled to put Deatherage on third. Haylee Sindt capped off the inning with an RBI single to score Deatherage, putting the Sagehens ahead 2-1.
But the Regals rallied to score three runs the following inning, taking the 4-3 advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer pulled ahead again when they scored two runs in the fifth. The first run came off an RBI single by senior Bianca Cockrell that scored Deatherage. Sindt then crossed the plate off a wild pitch to tie the game at 4-4. The Regals rallied in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to take the lead for good.
Rodarte and Sindt both finished the game 2-4 at the plate. Sofia Baig and Ornelas each added a hit.
Freshman Alondra Reynoso got the start for the Sagehens, striking out one.
