Men's Water Polo: Sagehens Open SCIAC Play With 20-4 Win Over Occidental

LOS ANGELES, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 20-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Pool.

Season Impact: With the Win, the Sagehens improve to 4-3 overall and earn their first SCIAC win of the season to move to 1-0 in conference play.

The Sagehens were led by Adam Ward and Sam Sasaki who each tallied a hat-trick with three goals each in the win.

The Sagehens jumped out to an early lead as Sam Sasaki scored the opening goal of the match just under a minute in to take a 1-0 lead. Occidental tied the game shortly after, the Pomona-Pitzer ended the quarter with four-straight goals from Sam Sasaki, Benjamin Sasaki, and two from Ward to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period.

Oxy got its second goal of the afternoon to open up the second period but the Sagehens wouldn't allow any more goals in the half. Sam Gorcey-Biblowitz got on the board followed by a goal from Riley Mangan and Jack Mallery ended the half with a goal off of an assist from Jacob Cohn to extend the Sagehens lead to 8-2 heading into halftime.

The Sagehens' offense exploded in the third as they notched a game-high eight goals. After an early goal by the Tigers to open up the half, the Sagehens went on a scoring spree as Tony Murphy, Cade Curry, Sam Sasaki, Benjamin Sasaki, Dylan Elliott, Keegan Coleman, and Ward all hit the back of the net to extend the lead to 16-3.

The Sagehens added four more goals in the fourth from Adam Gross, Zach Senator, Maxwell Bethel and Alex Figueras as they cruised to a win in their opening SCIAC game over Occidental.
