CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Fresno Pacific 10-9 in overtime and defeated Air Force 15-10 in the Gary Troyer Tournament at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in SCIAC play.
Fresno Pacific and Pomona-Pitzer started the day with a low scoring first half with the Sunbirds netting the only goal of the first period on a five-meter penalty shot.
The two teams each scored two goals in the second with Sagehen goals from Mangan and Senator as Pomona-Pitzer trailed 3-2 at the half.
The Sagehens started the scoring in the second half as Schafer scored off of an assist from Gross but the Sagehens went goalless for the rest of the quarter while the Sunbirds added a goal as well to hold a 4-3 lead heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer opened up the fourth with three-straight goals from Gross, Schafer and Mangan to take their first lead of the game at 6-4 but the Sunbirds responded with three of the last four goals of the fourth as the teams were deadlocked at 7-7 at the end of regulation.
The Sagehens opened up overtime with back to back goals from Ries and Coleman but Fresno Pacific ended the first overtime with a goal with just 57 seconds left to cut the lead down to 9-8.
The Sunbirds tied the game in the second overtime with 1:57 remaining at 9-9 but the Sagehens earned a five-meter penalty shot after the goalkeeper dunked the ball with just three second left on the game clock.
Schafer took the five-meter penalty and buried it in the corner of the goal to seal the late overtime win for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens then earned a big 15-10 win in the second game of their double header against Air Force.
The Sagehens had six players have multi-goal games as Adam Ward, Senator, Schafer, Sasaki, Gorcey-Biblowitz and Coleman all tallied two goals in the win. Diemer got the win in goal as he went all 32 minutes and tallied 14 saves to go along with two steals.
The Sagehens and Falcons began the first period as they went back and forth on goals until Air force netted back to back goals in the final two minutes to take a 4-2 lead in the first but Schafer found the net for his first goal of the night with just five seconds left to cut the deficit to just 4-3 heading into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense took off in the second as they outscored the Falcons 5-2 with goals from Coleman, Gorcey-Biblowitz and senator to give the Sagehens an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Each team netted four goals in the third to push the Sagehens' lead to 12-10 but the Sagehens defense led by Diemer shutout the Falcons in the fourth as Sasaki, Schafer and Max Ries added goals to their total as Pomona-Pitzer stayed perfect on the day over two teams receiving votes for the top-20.
