ORANGE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Chapman 11-6 and non-conference opponent Riverside CC 23-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens move to 2-4 overall and start SCIAC play with a 1-0 record.
The Sagehens were led by Adam Ward who tallied a team-high three goals in the win. Riley Mangan and Joseph Schafer each had multi-goal games as well with two each and Dylan Elliot, Jacob Niskey, Noah Sasaki and Adam Gross each chipped in with one.
The Sagehens jumped out on the scoreboard with as Ward notched his first goal of the day but the Panthers responded with back to back goals to take a 2-1 lead. The Sagehens ended the first with two-straight goals from Schafer to take a 3-2 lead heading into the second.
The Panthers and Sagehens each netted three goals in the second as Pomona-Pitzer held a 6-5 lead at the half.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated on defense during the second half as they only allowed one goal scored in the third and fourth periods combined. The Sagehens extended their lead in the third as they outscored the Panthers 3-1 and tacked on two more goals in the fourth as they took care of Chapman and began their SCIAC season with a win.
The Sagehens then returned home to take on Riverside CC in game two of their double header.
The Sagehens began the game as they put up a staggering seven goals in the first period and led 7-0 over the Tigers heading into the second.
Riverside fought back and kept the second period close as they were only outscored by one goal 4-3 but the Sagehens held a commanding 11-3 lead at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to net six goals in the third and six more in the fourth as they cruised to an easy victory over the Tigers at home.
