REDLANDS, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team split in day one of the Inland Empire Classic with a 13-11 loss against Redlands and a 16-8 victory over Concordia.
The Sagehens opened up the Inland Empire Classic against the tournament host Redlands Bulldogs. Redlands was led by Matt Shippen who had a game-high five goals for the Bulldogs in the win. Pomona-Pitzer was led by senior Joseph Schafer who tallied four goals in the loss for the Sagehens.
Redlands struck first to open up the game with a 1-0 lead but the Sagehens struck back with three-straight goals as senior James Baker scored his first goal of the match and sophomore Adam Ward notched two goals in a row to give the Sagehens a 3-1 lead after the first.
The Bulldogs came back in the second period to reclaim the lead as they outscored the Sagehens 4-1. Senior Tommy Turner was able to score the only goal of the period for Pomona-Pitzer as they trailed Redlands 5-4 at halftime.
The Bulldogs came out of the break and extended their lead as they outscored the Sagehens 4-1 for the second-straight period to push the lead to 9-6 heading into the final period.
Pomona-Pitzer came roaring back in the fourth by scoring four of the first five goals in the period to cut the Redlands' lead down to 11-10 after a goal by Baker. Redlands answered with the next goal but Ward responded with a goal of his own to bring the deficit back down to one goal with 1:19 remaining. The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Sagehen comeback and added one more goal with 13 seconds remaining as Redlands held on to beat Pomona-Pitzer in game one of the Inland Empire Classic.
The Sagehens then took on Concordia in the second game of their doubleheader. Pomona-Pitzer was led by Schafer and Baker who each tallied a game-high three goals in the win.
The Sagehens scored the first two goals of the match as Schafer and Baker each scored their first goals of the night to take a quick 2-0 lead. Concordia responded with two of its own but Pomona-Pitzer took the lead with 41 seconds left as Ward scored his first goal of the match to take a 4-3 lead going into the second period.
Both teams each scored three goals as Ward, Schaffer and freshman Cade Curry each added a goal for the Sagehens to keep a one goal lead at 7-6 going into the half.
Pomona-Pitzer pulled away in second half as the Sagehens outscored Concordia 7-1 in the third period of play. The Sagehens defense stood strong in the second half as they only allowed two second half goals for the Eagles and held on to take a 16-8 win.
The Sagehens continue the Inland Empire Classic as they take on La Verne at 9:00 a.m. and UC Irvine at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11th.
