LA VERNE, CA: Locked up in a tight defensive match-up with Pomona-Pitzer for the second time this season, Redlands posted five second half goals to race past the Sagehens for a 6-3 victory and clinch a berth in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals tomorrow at La Verne Aquatics Center.
The tournament's third game of the day proved to be its most defensive one yet as the Sagehens and Bulldogs used excellent defense and a little help from the crossbars to take a 1-1 score into halftime. After a scoreless 1st quarter that saw Daniel Diemer and Redlands Goalkeeper Chris Sekula as the playmakers, the Sagehens (11-16, 3-5 SCIAC) would get on the board first on a James Baker goal with 2:31 remaining in the 2nd quarter. The Bulldogs (16-13, 6-2 SCIAC) only needed 17 seconds to get the equalizer and finish the scoring for the half.
The Sagehen defense held steady over the first four minutes of the third quarter but surrendered back to back goals with 4:25 and 3:49 left in the 3rd to take a 3-1 deficit into the 4th quarter. While Timmy Hardman would cut the Bulldog lead to one on a penalty shot goal at the 6:54 mark, Redlands outscored the Sagehens 3-1 over the final 6 minutes to capture a 6-3 victory and advance to the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals.
James Baker led the way for the Sagehens netting two goals while Daniel Diemer made five saves in the cage.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action at 3pm tomorrow as they take on the winner of the 8am game between La Verne and Caltech. Live video for the match will be provided on the SCIAC Portal.
