Sagehens Fall In Overtime To CMS

Claremont, Calif. - The CMS Men's Water Polo team scored the first two goals of the second overtime and held on for a 16-15 home win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 8-20 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC, while playing its second straight overtime contest (after defeating Chapman 14-13 on Wednesday). CMS improves to 14-9 overall and 6-1 in league play.

CMS held an 8-6 lead at the half and built it to 10-6 early in the second half, before a 4-0 Sagehen run tied the score at 10-10. CMS answered on the final possession of the third quarter to take an 11-10 lead, but Pomona-Pitzer took its first lead of the second half at 13-12 with less than two minutes to play.

The Stags were able to find the equalizing goal, and Pomona-Pitzer had a great chance with five seconds to play in front of the net, but were unable to get the ball into the net.

CMS scored on the first possession of overtime, but senior Jarrod Gaut answered back on a postup to knot the score 14-14. The Sagehens had a 6-on-5 to try to take the lead, but were unable to take advantage.

Tanner Cullen gave the Stags the lead for good with a deep shot off a restart in the second overtime, and a lob shot put CMS ahead 16-14 with just over 1:00 to play. Junior Stephen Vint (pictured) cut the lead to one on a man-up goal with 46 seconds left, and the Sagehens drew an offensive foul. Gaut had a good look on a counter in close, but his shot was saved and a rebound shot on the perimeter went high as the Stags were able to hold on.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. road match at Redlands.
