Pomona-Pitzer Defeats Whittier 15-11 To Advance To SCIAC Finals

Whittier, Calif. - Jarrod Gaut (Irvine, Calif. - pictured) had four goals and Jason Cox (Arnold, Md.) and Clayton Hardman (Old Greenwich, Conn.) each added three as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Water Polo team defeated host Whittier 15-11 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinals on Saturday.

The win levels Pomona-Pitzer's record at 14-14 on the year (after an 0-11 start against 11 teams ranked in the national top 20) and a perfect 10-0 against SCIAC opponents.

The Sagehens will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the finals at Whittier tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., the second year in a row that the two teams have played for the SCIAC championship. Last year, the Sagehens prevailed 7-4 at La Verne.

After a tight first quarter, Pomona-Pitzer used a 4-0 run in the second quarter to turn a 4-3 lead into a commanding 8-3 advantage, capped off by a Gaut goal with 3:36 left in the half. Whittier closed within 8-5, but Cox found the net with just four seconds left in the half to make the score 9-5 at the break.

Whittier came out with renewed life in the second half, and scored the first two goals to get as close as 9-7 with 3:24 left in the third. Gaut, though, stopped the run with 1:52 left in the frame for his fourth goal of the day, and Cox and Hardman scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to put the game away.

Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) added two goals for the Sagehens, while Robert Chew (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Cody Moore (San Dimas, Calif.) and Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) each had one.

Pomona-Pitzer played CMS last weekend in its home finale on Senior Day, with the Sagehens capping off a perfect 8-0 regular season in the SCIAC with a 12-9 win at Haldeman Pool. The Stags led 7-4 early in the third quarter of that one, before a 7-0 Sagehen run proved to be decisive.
