Second Half Rally Pushes Air Force Past Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The Air Force Men's Water Polo team used a 5-0 run in the third quarter and held off Pomona-Pitzer in the fourth as it captured a 13-9 win over the Sagehens on Friday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.

The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 11-14 on the year, while Air Force improves to 15-9 with the victory.

Senior Jason Cox (Arnold, Md. - pictured, photo by Becky Gaut) had four goals for Pomona-Pitzer and broke a 5-5 tie with the first goal of the second half, giving the Sagehens a 6-5 lead. However, Air Force scored the next five goals to take a 10-6 lead, with two coming from Brad Rajchel in that stretch.

Junior Jarrod Gaut (Irvine, Calif.) stopped the run for Pomona-Pitzer with a goal with just two seconds left in the third quarter, and junior Ryan Higgins (Orinda, Calif.) added the first goal of the fourth quarter to make the score 10-8. A five-meter goal from Rajchel pushed the lead to 11-8, and sophomore Clayton Hardman (Old Greenwich, Conn.) was able to bring the Sagehens within 11-9 with 3:57 left, but they could come no closer.

Brad Stedman had four goals for Air Force, including back-to-back goals in the second quarter to tie the game after Pomona-Pitzer used a 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead. Cox had the first three of those goals, and senior Mark Hudnall (Los Altos, Calif.) added the first of his two goals to make the score 4-2 with 5:05 left in the half.

Matt Fish had 18 saves for Air Force in goal, including a key stop of Cox in the middle of the third quarter to prevent the Sagehens from stopping the pivotal run. Tyler Hill (Lafayette, Calif.) had eight saves for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Sagehens will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a battle for the regular season SCIAC title. Pomona-Pitzer comes into the match at 7-0 in league play, while CMS is right behind at 6-1.
