Men's Soccer: Sagehens To Take The Pitch Friday

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer Team will kick off the 2018 season this Friday as the Sagehens host the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs at 7:30 p.m. With an influx of exciting talented freshmen and the return of several star players from last season, the Sagehens are eager to climb to the top of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and get into the NCAA Tournament.

2017 Season

After ending the regular season with an 8-8-2 record overall and 7-5-2 in the SCIAC, the Sagehens finished fourth in the conference standings and fell to then no. 20 Redlands in the SCIAC Semifinals to conclude the season. Ben Mitchell concluded his final season with the Hens with a 1st Team All-SCIAC award and posting a career-high six shutouts with a .757 save percentage. Now-graduated Peter Rentzepis has an excellent season on offense for the Hens, scoring six goals and making three assists and defender Ethan Flor helped Mitchell preserve the net while helping the offense by scoring four goals. The Hens had several notable victories, including a season-sweep over cross-street rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and a 2-0 victory over Willamette.

Key Returners

After seeing a handful of star seniors graduate last season, the Sagehens will move forward with a new roster featuring several exciting freshmen and some star returnees. Senior Aidan Ferrer will look to improve upon last season, having earned 2nd Team All-SCIAC and recording the second-most goals in the SCIAC with eight in his tally. The Sagehens will also be counting on Taylor Reifert to improve his outstanding play in the midfield after recording three goals and three assists last season. In the backline, Peter Heckendorn and Jack Arnold are expected to reinforce the defense after combining for 24 starts last season as freshmen.
