WOODLAND HILLS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team were dealt a tough 5-2 road loss to Cal Lutheran University in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Wednesday night. Jacob Merkle scored the go-ahead goal for the Sagehens in the 54th minute to put them up 2-1, but the Kingsmen rallied with four goals for the comeback victory.
Season Impact: The loss gives the Sagehens a 6-6-2 record overall and 5-4-2 in the SCIAC while Cal Lutheran improves to 10-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the conference.
Aidan Ferrer and Merkle scored a goal each for the Sagehens while Bjorn Sigurdsson had an assist. The Kingsmen were led by Joey Arnold who sparked CLU's offense with an incredible night, scoring five goals, while Daniel Aguilar collected an assist.
Cal Lutheran looked the aggressor in the first half, pressuring the Sagehens to turn the ball over in midfield. However, the Sagehens held their own ground and did not appear overwhelmed, looking for their opportunity to attack. In the 31st minute, that moment came for Aidan Ferrer who drilled a shot to the top right corner of the net to put the Hens ahead 1-0. However, Arnold quickly responded in the 34th minute following a corner kick by his teammate Danny Pacheco, receiving a deflection in the box and firing the ball with his left foot into the net to tie it 1-1.
The Sagehens took back the lead in the second half at the 54th minute when Sigurdsson whipped a free kick that connected with the head of Merkle and into the net, putting Pomona-Pitzer ahead 2-1.
In the 67th minute, Arnold connected on a cross with a header, but saw his shot deflected off Sagehen keeper Ben Mitchell. Arnold quickly reacted as the ball remained in the air and headed it in again to tie the game. Later in the 72nd minute, Arnold completed his hat trick off a corner from Danny Pacheco, rebounding a deflected shot and finding the net to make it 3-2. He scored in the 83rd and 84th minute to pad the Kingsmen lead as the Sagehens couldn't close the gap at the final whistle.
