CMS Takes 2-0 Win Over Sagehens

Claremont, Calif. - The CMS Men's Soccer team scored an early goal on a scramble and added a late insurance goal to take a 2-0 home win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.

With the loss, the Sagehens slip to 10-4-1 overall and 8-3-1 in the SCIAC, remaining in first place by a half-game over 8-4 Occidental, but seeing virtually all of its big lead in the standings slip away after falling to Occidental earlier this week. CMS improves its chances of qualifying for the SCIAC Tournament by improving to 6-5-1 in conference play.

CMS started out the game putting the Sagehens under pressure, with three quick shots from the top of the 18 that were blocked by the Pomona-Pitzer defense before they could get through to Nigel Brady. After a corner kick, though, a loose ball bounced around off several players before Mehron Abdi turned and fired a shot from eight yards out just 4:53 into the game.

The Sagehens thought they had the equalizer with seven seconds left in the first half, but sophomore Felipe Galvis' goal on a counter was waved off for offsides. Junior Paul Picciano (pictured) nearly tied the score up in the 70th minute on a corner kick, when he outjumped everyone at the top of the six-yard box and snapped a low header into the ground, but it was cleared off the line by a CMS defender.

The Stags then sealed it with 13:56 left as Jake Bishop sent a 30-yard blast into the upper-right corner to push the lead to 2-0. Pomona-Pitzer did have another goal called back for offsides late in the game as Avery Raimondo's one-timer was taken off the board with about two minutes to play, which would have given the Sagehens just enough time for a desperation push.

Pomona-Pitzer has a quick turnaround before traveling to Chapman on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest, completing a three-game road swing.
