Sagehens Drop SCIAC Opener To La Verne

Claremont, Calif. - The La Verne Men's Soccer team scored twice in the second half to remain undefeated on the year with a 2-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Monday afternoon in the SCIAC opener for both teams.

Pomona-Pitzer slips to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the SCIAC with the loss, while La Verne stays unbeaten on the young season at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league play.

The first half was uneventful, with the best scoring opportunity coming in the early going off a La Verne corner kick, as freshman Jk Gopakumar (pictured) cleared a shot off the line for the Sagehens to keep the game scoreless.

However, the Leopards would strike first 11:32 into the second half. La Verne broke up the middle of the field, and a Sagehen defender stepped in to knock the ball toward the sideline. However, the clear went right to Nathan Gonzalez outside the box, who took a quick dribble and fired a shot from 15 yards that hit off the far post and went into the net to make the score 1-0.

Pomona-Pitzer pressed forward looking for an equalizer later in the half, but La Verne struck quickly on a counter off a Sagehen corner kick. Boye Christiansen dribbled up the middle of the field against one Pomona-Pitzer defender, and laid the ball off to his right to Joshua Hill. Hill then ran onto it, and cracked a laser from 20 yards out straight into the upper-left corner to make the score 2-0 with 16:05 left.

The Sagehens had their best chance with just over eight minutes left as senior Drew Lind hit a low shot from the top of the 18-yard box that hit the left post and went over the end line for a goal kick.

Junior goalie Nigel Brady had four saves for the Sagehens, while Dylan Roberts had five saves to get the shutout for the Leopards.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it takes on CMS for a 4 p.m. contest.
